Celebrating ten years of Gastronomica
3/10/2010
The Winter 2010 issue of
Gastronomica marks ten years of publication for this award-winning journal.
Lauded in the 2008
Saveur 100 as “At the top of our bedside reading pile since its inception in 2001,”
Gastronomica: The Journal of Food and Culture has raised the bar for excellence in food writing and investigation.
Ahead of its time in recognizing the importance of looking at serious issues surrounding food, and international in scope,
Gastronomica has carved out a distinctive place for itself. Edgy, never predictable or boring, it tackles topics not likely to be found in more mainstream publications. Says Editor in Chief Darra Goldstein, “
Gastronomica seeks to make readers aware of the power of food--its social and cultural relevance, its enormous emotional weight.”
Issue 10:1’s compelling cover image "Blood Fountain," a painting by Teheran artist Farhad Moshiri, draws readers into the journal. Feature articles include:
• Another Form of her Genius: Lee Miller in the Kitchen, Becky Conekin’s look at the little known, avid cooking of photographer and Man Ray model Lee Miller
• Chef’s Page, featuring White House pastry chef Bill Yosses
• Sylvia Plath and Food, Lynda K. Bundtzen’s investigation of the poet’s passion for food, utilizing previously unexplored archival materials
• Master of Wine Bill Nesto’s essay on Discovering Terroir in the World of Chocolate
• Robert Dickinson’s search for Moxie, “…the oldest continually produced soda in America--and quite possibly the worst tasting, as well.”
• A cartoon montage from the celebrated New Yorker cartoonist David Sipress
• On Curing Images and Pork by poet Tung-Hui Hu
• Charlotte Druckman’s essay, Why Have There Been No Great Women Chefs? inspired by art historian Linda Nochlin’s groundbreaking essay on women artists
• Subscribers receive a 16-page supplement featuring provocative and memorable images by photographers from around the world, including Richard Learoyd, Valerie Bélin, and Zwelethu Mthethwa.
Issue 10:1 is available now at newsstands and booksellers nationwide.
The celebration of
Gastronomica’s 10th anniversary is also marked with the publication of
The Gastronomica Reader, edited by Darra Goldstein (UC Press; $39.95), a sumptuous sampling of the most notable pieces from the journal’s pages. In addition, anniversary events are taking place across the country, including the
Gastronomica Forum: FoodFashion on February 24th at the Astor Center in New York City; a conversation with Harold McGee on April 1st at Berkeley’s David Brower
Center; and the
Gastronomica Williams College Museum of Art Symposium “The Place of Taste: An Exploration of Food, Art, and Community” on October 2nd in Williamstown, MA.
