Journal of the American Musicological Society

1. Articles: The Journal encourages submission of articles up to 20,000 words in length. Submissions exceeding this length will be considered at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.

2. Authors of articles to be considered for publication should submit one complete copy to the Editor-in-Chief (address below). Material should be sent as an e-mail attachment, the text of the submission as a Word file (.doc or .docx), tables and captions as separate files, and all examples, figures (continuous tone and line illustrations), etc., separately as PDFs or JPGs. Locations of all examples, tables, and figures should be indicated in the text. Text material should be presented double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch.

3. The article must include (1) a short abstract, done in conformity with the RILM guidelines (http://www.rilm.org/submissions/pdf/Guidelines_AbstractStyle.pdf), and (2) a list of works cited, following Chicago Manual of Style bibliography guidelines.

4. To allow for the anonymous outside review of submissions, the author’s name should appear only in the cover letter, which should also contain the full title of the submission and all relevant contact information. Authors should avoid identifying themselves in the document itself (title page, header, or notes) or in the file information.

5. All submissions should use the normal style of footnotes, in conformity with the guidelines given in chapter 14 of The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th ed. (Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 2010). Shortened references should be used in all article footnotes. (Reviews need full bibliographic citation the first time a work is cited in a footnote.)

6. Musical examples should be provided with underlaid texts and clear captions exactly as they are to appear in the article and should be based on the most authoritative sources available, properly cited in the captions. Examples should be submitted as graphic files (PDF, JPG). Continuous tone and line illustrations are called “figures” in the Journal. Authors of accepted articles will be asked to submit all figures as glossy positive photographs or high-resolution digital files (300 dpi for images; 1200 dpi for line drawings, including score facsimiles). Authors of accepted articles will receive additional guidelines for the submission of any multimedia examples and related content for the online publication of the Journal.

7. Colloquies: The Journal periodically includes a collection of brief essays by multiple authors offering a dialogue on a specific topic or research question and introduced by a convenor. Proposals for colloquies should be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief by the convenor and should consist of a two-page overview accompanied by a list of four to six committed authors who are able to offer multiple expert viewpoints. Proposals will be reviewed by the Editor and by members of the Editorial Board. Convenors of accepted proposals will be responsible for submitting the entire colloquy in accordance with guidelines supplied by the Editor.  Final submissions must then be approved by the Editorial Board prior to publication.

8. Reviews: The Journal reviews selected scholarly books on music as well as music editions of scholarly significance in each issue. Textbooks, periodicals, and editions of new music are not usually reviewed.

9. Digital and Multimedia Scholarship: The Journal periodically reviews works of digital and multimedia scholarship, including documentary films, recordings, analytical software, interactive websites, and databases that are direct products of musicological research.

10. All articles and reviews submitted to the Journal should represent new work that has not been previously published in any format.
