Preparing the Manuscript
The manuscript should be typed and double-spaced throughout with ample margins on 8 1/2 X 11-inch bond paper. Two copies of each article should be submitted together with a diskette, a 75-100 word summary of the article and a self-addressed, letter size stamped envelope. Notes and tables should be on a separate page and their location in the text should be indicated in the margins. Illustrations may be included by arrangement with the editor. All material published in Mexican Studies/Estudios Mexicanos (MS/EM) will follow the latest edition of the Manual of Style by the University of Chicago Press and Webster's Third New International Dictionary. Authors should maintain consistency in style and follow one of the suggested formats in The Chicago Manual of Style. A title page should accompany the manuscript. This page should include the name of the author, the present address for correspondence, email address, and a current phone number if possible.

Capitalization
Prospective authors should note the forms used in the capitalization of institutions, historical periods, and groups. Capitalize these when referring to a specific one, for example, the national university, the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Capitalize Chicanos, Indians, Church, and Partido Liberal when referring to the institution or group. In titles of books and articles in Spanish, capitalize only the first word and names of persons and places. In titles of series, journals, and newspapers, however, capitalize all major words, e.g., Secretaría de Programación and La Opinión.

Numbers
Write out all numbers under 100; percentages should be numerical, e.g., 25 percent. When referring to subdivisions of a book in the text, use Volume III, chapter 18, and part one. Dates in text should follow these examples:

eighteenth-century trends continued into the nineteenth century

Punctuation
A comma precedes the conjunction joining the last item in a series of three or more. Mexican American and Hispanic American are not hyphenated unless they are hyphenated in the title of a book or article, in the name of an institution, or in a quotation.

Abbreviations
Use the acronym MS/EM when citing this journal. However, when referring to other publications, associations, or institutions cite the complete name and in parenthesis the acronym which will be subsequently used in the text. Use complete first names instead of initials only.

Italicized Words
All foreign words should be italicized with the exception of proper names. Do not use italics for words found in Webster's Third New International Dictionary of the English Language, Unabridged which contains a large number of Spanish words such as alcalde, barrio, conquistador. All Spanish words should be used in their original Spanish form. English or anglicized versions of Spanish words are not appropriate, e.g., Isabel not Isabella; grande not grandee.

Notes
Though there are variations in format among different discipline journals, authors should consult the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style for all matters of style and documentation. Authors should maintain a consistent format and note the following general rules. "Op. cit." is not used. Instead, use the author's last name and a short title, whether or not more than one work by the same author is cited. Ibid. and passim are not italicized. Words to be abbreviated in notes include ed., vol., leg., exp., fol., no., diss., and n. Unless confusion would result, "p." is omitted with page numbers.

Tables
Type tables on separate pages. The title should follow this form: Table 1: Estimates of Damage Caused by the War of Independence, 1810-1816. Source notes should be included with each table.

Figures
Professional quality, camera-ready copy is required. Graphs and charts should be drawn in permanent black ink. Figures should be proportional to a MS/EM page size of six inches by nine inches. Artwork and lettering should be prepared in a form suitable for reduction by the printer. Do not fold or write on the back of the finished product. Indicate in the margin of the text the correct location of the figure and furnish figure titles on the same page where the figure appears.

Art
Including graphs and charts, is normally to be provided as camera-ready copy, although illustrations created in Adobe PhotoShop or Illustrator, or MacroMedia Freehand will be accepted. Such files must be complete and accompanied by high-quality printouts.

Contributions may be synthetic, interpretive, analytical or theoretical. Articles should contribute in a significant way to the understanding of cultural, historical, political, social, economic, or scientific factors affecting the development of Mexico and/or draw important comparative conclusions specifically to Mexico. Two copies of each contribution, accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope should be submitted. Contributors will receive twenty-five offprints. Any additional offprints must be ordered on receipt of the first proof.

Manuscrito
El manuscrito deberá estar escrito a máquina, a doble espacio y con amplios márgenes en papel tamaño carta. Se deberán enviar dos copias de cada artículo, junto con un diskette y con un sumario de entre 75 y 100 palabras. Las notas y los cuadros o gráficas pueden ir en páginas aparte, pero su localización deberá indicarse en los márgenes del artículo. Se podrán publicar ilustraciones de acuerdo con el editor. Todos los materiales que publique Mexican Studies/Estudios Mexicanos (MS/EM) han de seguir las recomendaciones del Manual of Style de la Universidad de Chicago y el Diccionario De La Academia Española. La página con el título del artículo deberá incluir el nombre del autor y dirección para correspondencia, así como su numero telefónico, y correo elctronico, si es posible.

Mayúsculas
Se deberán usar las normas habituales en castellano. Se usarán mayúsculas para los nombres propios, instituciones, periodos históricos, series, y títulos de periódicos o revistas. Por ejemplo: Edad Media; Secretaría de Hacienda; Colección Austral; La Voz De México. No se usarán mayúsculas en el caso de nombres de grupos o de cargos o puestos, como indios, chicanos, estados, presidente, secretario.

Abreviaturas
Para referirse a esta revista se puede usar la abreviatura MS/EM. Cuando se desee usar de abreviaturas se deberá poner la primera vez el nombre completo y entre paréntesis la abreviatura usual o la escogida: Archivo General de la Nación, México (AGNM); Secretaría de Programación y Presupuesto (SPP). En el caso de que se usen más de 15 abreviaturas es conveniente añadir una clave alfabética. No abreviar la palabra etcétera.

Cursivas
Con excepción de los nombres propios, todas las palabras en idiomas extranjeros deberán subrayarse. Las palabras ya españolizadas no irán en cursiva, como cual es el caso de muchos indigenismos: tamal, batey, coa, malacate.

Notas
Dada la variedad de formas que se usan para las citas, se permitirán aquellas que aparecen en la última edición del Chicago Manual of Style u otras que sean uniformes. Se prefiere no usar op. cit. sino el apellido del autor y las primeras palabras del título de su trabajo, aunque no se citen otros títulos del autor. Las notas deberán seguir numeración corrida hasta el final.

Cuadros
Deberán ser enviados en páginas aparte. Se numerarán y se les pondrá un título: Cuadro 1. Mortalidad en la ciudad de México:1810-1821. Las notas sobre las fuentes pueden ir al final del cuadro.

Figura y Gráficas
Deberán enviarse en limpio para ser reproducidas en fotografía. El tamaño de las páginas de la revista MS/EM será de 6 x 9 pulgadas lo que se debe tener presente para que las figuras y gráficas guarden esa proporción. La localización precisa de las figuras y gráficas se indicará en el margen del texto del artículo.

Arte
Las reproducciones de arte, las gráficas y los cuadros deberán proveerse en copia fina, lista para proceder a la elaboración de negativos para la impresión (camera-ready). También se aceptan ilustraciones hechas en los programas Adobe PhotoShop, Illustrator o MacroMedia Freehand. Las versiones electrónicas de dichos archivos deberán ir acompañadas de impresiones de alta calidad.

MS/EM publicará artículos y ensayos breves, que signifiquen una contribución interpretativa o teórica para el conocimiento de la cultura y la historia mexicana o los aspectos sociales, económicos o científicos que tengan que ver con el desarrollo de México o estudios comparativos cuyas conclusiones se refieran a ese país. Los autores recibirán 25 sobretiros. Un número mayor puede ser solicitado al recibir las primeras pruebas de imprenta.
