Journal of the American Musicological Society
Directions to Contributors1. Authors of articles to be considered for publication should submit one complete copy to the Editor-in-Chief (address below). Material maybe sent as hard copy or by e-mail attachment. All material should be double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch.
2. To allow for the anonymous outside review of submissions, the author’s name should appear only in the cover letter, which should also contain the full title of the submission and all relevant contact information. Authors should avoid identifying themselves in the manuscript itself (title page, header, notes) or in the file information (for electronic submissions).
3. The article should include a short abstract, done in conformity with the RILM guidelines (available online at
http://www.rilm.org/submissions/pdf/Guidelines_AbstractStyle.pdf), and a list of works cited, following
Chicago Manual of Style bibliography guidelines.
4. All submissions should use the normal style of citation by footnotes, in conformity with the guidelines given in chapters 16 and 17 of
The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed. (Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 2003). The
Journal follows this manual, including the name of the publisher in those places that the manual specifies (e.g., Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 2003). The
Journal also follows the manual’s punctuation and its use of arabic numerals for volume numbers. First references to material should give a full bibliographic citation; further references should be abbreviated to author and short title.
5. Continuous tone and line illustrations are called “figures” in the
Journal. Glossy positive photographs or computer scans should be supplied for all continuous tone illustrations.
6. Tables and captions for figures and examples should be typed, double-spaced, on separate sheets.
7. Music examples should be (1) written or printed on separate sheets; (2) provided with underlaid texts and clear captions exactly as they are to appear in the article; and (3) based on the most authoritative sources available, properly cited in the captions. Locations of all examples, tables, or figures should be clearly indicated in the text.
8. Type is available for a large number of musical symbols, but fully notated music should not be included within sentences in the text of submissions.
9. Authors of accepted articles will be asked to submit the text of the entire article electronically and in a hard copy.
